“Career saboteurs” may be holding you back from job and life breakthroughs

By Brian Murphy

What is holding you back in your career—and in life?

Odds are it’s something within.

Nicole Fox and I discussed this topic in candid fashion on a recent episode of the Off the Record podcast. Prior to the show Nicole sent me a short self-assessment that reveals your “career saboteurs,” i.e., characteristics or traits that are holding you back from becoming your best self, or discovering your true calling.

I took it, and learned that my top 3 saboteurs are avoider, hyper achiever, and pleaser. Ranked low (and therefore not a problem for me) are controller, hyper rational, and restless.

All of which I found pretty darned accurate. I’ve linked to the assessment below; its free and only takes 6-8 minutes.

Making wholesale changes to your character might not be realistic (though it can happen), but you can notice your unhelpful thoughts and behaviors, and then take small steps to correct them when they’re not serving you.

Knowing yourself is the first step in self-improvement.

Here is a snippet of that conversation from the show.
