The OIG audited 21 specific DRGs—and found heavy error rates with these four
The Office of Inspector General (OIG) released results of three acute care hospital audits with a combined $35M in recommended recoupments.
21 specific DRGs were the target, four of which landed squarely in the bullseye.
SVP of Solutions Jason Jobes identified the OIG’s targets, methodology, findings, explained their extrapolation methodology, and offered strategies for risk mitigation in a recent webinar.
We’re offering the recording here for to you to listen.
Following are a couple of Jason’s findings from the reports as presented on the program.
- Of 54 inpatient errors uncovered by the OIG, 46 were tied to documentation insufficient to meet the requirements of the 2 Midnight Rule
- The average penalty for each of these was just over $11,000 per case
- The total Medicare revenue slated for recommended recoupment ranged from 2-6%; this is your approximate revenue at risk.
A 2-6% loss of Medicare revenue is unaffordable for healthcare organizations, most of which are operating on razor-thin margins.
