Credentials & Requirements
Required Credentials:
- CCS required
Preferred Credentials:
- RHIA or RHIT preferred
Education:
- Associate Degree preferred
Experience:
- 5+ years of hospital coding experience
- 5 years in supervisory hospital coding role preferred
- Strong inpatient acute care coding background required
- Experience with research accounts and clinical trials is a plus
Additional Requirements / Skills:
- Strong understanding of inpatient coding and billing regulations
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to work well under pressure
- Strong computer skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
- Comfortable providing staff education and feedback
- Ability to collaborate across Coding, CDI, Revenue Integrity, Billing, Care Management, and Performance Improvement

- Monitor daily coding productivity and workflow
- Ensure work queues, chart distribution, and assignments are managed appropriately
- Ensure coding work supports timely bill drop
Productivity Volumes by Specialty:
Audit / QA Program:
- Audit coder work as needed
- Provide feedback and education when improvement opportunities are identified
- Conduct quarterly performance calls with staff
- Conduct annual performance evaluations
- Identify education gaps and escalate them to senior leadership
- Ensure staff receive feedback regarding coding and DRG changes
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily inpatient coding workflow, work queues, assignments, chart distribution, and productivity
- Monitor DNFB/unbilled accounts for missing documentation, charges, levels, and pre-bill coding edits
- Serve as a coding resource for staff and provide guidance on diagnoses, procedures, and coding questions
- Partner closely with CDIP/CDI leadership to facilitate chart review and communicate coding/DRG changes
- Audit coder performance and identify opportunities for education
- Partner with Revenue Integrity, Billing, Care Management, Performance Improvement, and other departments to support timely billing
- Monitor coding denials, trends, and CMS policy changes
- Identify operational issues and recommend solutions to HIM leadership
- Support staff performance management, education, and communication
