Part Time IP Critical Access Coder
Overview:

The Inpatient Remote Coder is responsible for accurately coding inpatient medical records for a Critical Access Hospital (CAH). This role focuses on the assignment of appropriate diagnosis (ICD-10), procedure codes (ICD-10-PCS), and DRGs to ensure proper reimbursement and compliance with regulatory standards. The position is fully remote, but the coder must collaborate closely with the HIM department and clinical staff to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Review, analyze, and code inpatient medical records using ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding systems.
  • Assign accurate DRGs based on documentation to ensure accurate reimbursement under CMS guidelines.
  • Abstract pertinent clinical data for statistical and reporting purposes.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and hospital regulations, including HIPAA and CMS.
  • Regularly participate in coding audits and reviews to maintain coding accuracy.
  • Collaborate with clinical staff to ensure documentation meets coding and compliance standards.
  • Stay up to date on changes in coding standards and healthcare regulations.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree preferred).
  • Certification: RHIA, RHIT, or CCS certification required.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of inpatient coding experience, preferably in a Critical Access Hospital or similar setting.
  • Thorough knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and DRG coding.
  • Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) and coding software systems.
  • Strong understanding of Medicare and Medicaid inpatient billing regulations.

Skills:

  • Detail-oriented with excellent analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote setting.
  • Strong communication skills for coordinating with clinical and HIM staff.
  • Proficient in medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
